Updated Google Maps/Earth 3D Imagery [06/2022]

Google Earth has updated imagery for Dallas that is dated as Nov 2018. They must have put it up there fairly recently because I think I checked 2 weeks ago and it was still the Aug '17 imagery at that time.

Looking at the Uptown (or more generally north of downtown area) I'm really starting to see that the dream of a massive interconnected neighborhood is finally forming. Thanks to the last 10 years of low rise apartment infill we're really starting to see a contiguous bit of density across the entire region, in my opinion. Excited to see what the next ten years brings.

Finally. Although, I wish they had done it in a "greener" month than November. Better than January, but Spring/Summer always makes urban areas look better from above when things are greenest.

EDIT: Where did you get this imagery? When I look at Dallas on google maps, long completed projects are still missing. It's not nearly as updated as what was posted above.

Thanks for sharing! Strange but mine has not updated either. I still show McKiney & Olive as under construction along with a few other projects as well.

But yes, I totally agree that these next 10 years will be very interesting.

You have to go on actual Google Earth. It will update there a little bit before maps.google.com does

I hope they wait and retake the photos. The imagery on Google Maps may be outdated, but it is green and pretty. The photo posted above is winter brown and looks depressing.

The regular google map aerial imagery seems to be finally updated, at least for the urban core. I'm still not happy they took the imagery in winter because of the "brown" look, but the increase in density was immediately noticed with all the new projects over the last 5 years.

Interesting thing I've seen while browsing around for the last 20 minutes [at work ] - the # of new low rise multifamily units in the urban area seems to have significantly tappered off. For the last few years, at any given time there were 5-10 under construction in the downtown/uptown/oak lawn/deep ellum/cedars/trinity groves area.

At this time it looks like there are still a handful that are nearing completion or are substantially complete, but fewer new ones that are breaking ground. Looks like that while the DFW area might be a nation leader in new apartment starts, not enough of it is happening in the urban area.

Nowhere near that recent in Deep Ellum. Images are from before the Case Building opened and before the previous buildings on the Novel Building site were demolished.

The updated images are on Google Earth itself, not Google Maps. On Google Earth you can see the completed Case Building and even the crane resting on Elan City Lights.

Looks like we got a bonus pass due to the Tornado. Dallas proper is now updated again on Google Earth with a 10/21 date (one day after the tornado.)


I actually am stunned that Google (or whoever operates their satellites) was able to retask their satellites that quickly. Maybe they just bought another providers imagery that has a quicker reaction time? Very interesting.

Yes, it was an amazing sight to get that bonus coverage. The quality is not all that great though. Have to stay a couple thousand feet up to keep the resolution from getting too blurry.

Very nice. Google Maps did a special sweep right after Harvey too. Could see flood waters all over neighborhoods still.

Go back to 2018 in Street View, and, then move forward to present again. I looked at D CAD and saw who owns the land parcel/parcels, but, I hesitate to even contact them because other than perhaps contracting out to mow the property, they might not even know it's there. Would be a shame to see it go if they have no part in it and didn't care for it, haha. It's been there slowly growing for a couple of years.

Actually been working on this since last night. At the risk of being Debbie Downer, I wonder about the legality of that. Water rights can be very valuable in this state. I recall Dallas hitting up a construction with a very big fine when one of their guys innocently filled up a tanker from a lake. Even the folks with waterfront property have to pay the city an annual fee to irrigate their lawns from the lake.

An interesting case is the Dow Chemical factory in Freeport. They use 100,000 gallons of Brazos River water a minute. They were to first to acquire water rights on the Brazos, so they have first dibs on any water from it in perpetuity. In the event of a drought no one else -- including cities and water districts -- can take a drop until Dow gets their share.

Not necessarily related to the funny tote thing, but I happened to be going through where the tornado hit North Dallas in 2019 on street view last night. The street view car went down some of the streets in January 2020 after the tornado went through and you can see some of the heavy damage:

We finally got some updated 3D imagery! I've been spamming them to update the core (not sure what other parts of the city they did, as I just saw Downtown & digital sprinted here to post) and just saw the new imagery. Literally a few days ago, The Victor, Atelier, etc. were missing from the map. They're present!

Seeing The Stack's mural on there is super cool, too, but damn does that blank wall still bother me. Just glad that we have updated imagery.

I still hate how they always photograph Dallas for google images during the winter or early Spring. Trees are generally leafless, grass and plants are brownish, which blends with the concrete and makes it look so dull.

Compare this to google maps of Austin which are obviously photographed during greener times of the year.
