Downtown Dallas: Hampton Inn (Allen Bldg., 1700 Commerce)

Post by jrd1964 »

(looked for previous post, guess there wasn't one since the forum change.....)

A fire broke out overnight at the parking garage construction site for the Hampton (and the AC/Residence Inn upcoming next door). By 5am this morning, Dallas FD had everything controlled. The guests at the Hampton were evacuated as a precaution, although the fire never affected the hotel.

Saw that this morning... Looked pretty serious. I never knew a parking garage could burn like that. Glad everyone seems to be okay. I heard that they believe it was tied to a crane or something that was parked inside.

Here's what a charred parking garage looks like.

Has anyone heard anything about the restaurant space here? Last I saw, the Fireside Pies signage was long gone and it looked like the hotel was using the space for storage.

I think Fireside was waiting on the parking garage access. It seems they were taking longer than anticipated on the garage construction and then it also caught on fire recently. Now all the hotels are opening and they still have no garage for cars. Since its Valet I am sure they have a deal with a nearby lot or garage but I imagine Fireside is more interested in parking access before considering opening even with the time it would take to finish out their space.

Not only no on-site parking yet, no pool yet, either. The 3 hotels will have a combined 300+ rooms. NewcrestImage (the franchisee behind all 3 hotels) could ill afford the fire delay.

Eh, its "winter" in Dallas plus the pool was gonna be a pretty lame one at that so it's just a negative for some bookings for families until they can finish it.

Well, it's not Fireside Pies, but... Starbucks has been named as the tenant for the storefront by the Hampton Inn. The article doesn't give a timeframe for completion or opening.

Now if we could get the ground level of the Dal-Park garage activated that would really improve that stretch of commerce.

AKA if Neiman Marcus would get the space they control repaired they could have some beneficial neighbors...yet instead their garage sits there rotting.

That and the DPL space that had the Jos a banks store. An HM, Uniqlo, or Zara would be awesome! Such a nice building that could house a nice retailer.

Neiman Marcus should put a 'Last Call' into that space... Seems fitting, since they own it anyway.

It is amazing that Neimans has allowed their garage to fall into such disrepair. Especially considering the fact that they have their logo on the front of the building. Does the downtown location do enough business to justify its existence or do they just keep it open due to its historical significance? I rarely see people in there when I pass.

Every Neiman's I have been in has always been a very quiet place even the NorthPark location. Their sales expectations are very different than Nordstroms, Macy's and Dillards who I would more closely judge by the number of people walking around.

I guess I was just trying to think of a reason why Neimans would allow their garage to be in that condition, thought maybe it was because of a lack of business, and therefore a lack of focus on that store. I am surprised the city hasn’t stepped in and forced them to clean it up. I don’t think most businesses in the middle of downtown would be allowed to plaster their windows long term with plywood.

I not the retail guru, thankfully we have much more knowledgeable members on the site for that. However I am under the impression that this Neimans location relies heavily on personal shoppers and appointment only. If true, their customers would not see the garage. Whip in to valet and whip out.
