Greater DFW-area trails
Greater DFW-area trails
Two new bridges were installed this week on trails in the River Legacy section of north Arlington. This will be part of a 64-mile hike-bike pathway that will eventually connect Fort Worth to Dallas.

This trail is part of a greater Regional Veloweb plan eyed by NCTCOG that would span more than 7000 miles.

Here's a link to a bunch of maps for the Veloweb. Good break down by County and Connection between cities (Dal-Mckinney, Dal-Denton, Plano-FW, etc)

Re: Greater DFW-area trails
Apparently Allen is super-important to the 2040 regional veloweb. It has a regional line (highlighter green) funded approximately every 2 miles E/W and N/S through the entire city. Garland? - You're on your own.
Is Irving not a member of the NCTCOG? They get shafted even harder than Garland.

Re: Greater DFW-area trails
I did see this on the City of Irving city counsel meeting from a couple of weeks ago...
It'll be good to start connecting some of these trails. I'm still looking forward to something that'll connect the northern and southern sections of Campion trail. But, I suspect they are waiting for action on the Texas Stadium site first.
10 Resolution - Approving an Interlocal Agreement Between the City of Irving
and the City of Dallas for the Connection of the Dallas Skyline Trail to the
Campion Trail System at Trinity View Park
Administrative Comments
1. This item is recommended by the Capital Improvement Program Department. It
supports Strategic Objective 4.5 – Implement enhancements to cultural and
recreational facilities.
2. Impact: This Interlocal Agreement will provide a trail connection with Campion
Trails at Trinity View Park from the City of Dallas. This project will enhance the
quality of life for Irving residents by allowing access to the Dallas trail system and
downtown Dallas.
3. This item was presented at the Transportation and Natural Resource
Committee on June 6, 2018.
4. The City of Dallas has received a TxDOT grant to build 5 miles of trail from the
Sylvan Drive bridge which will tie into the existing 5 miles of Skyline trail.
5. This agreement will allow the City of Dallas to build a bridge over the Trinity River
and provide a connecting trail on City of Irving property, using City of Irving trail
specifications, with no cost to Irving.
6. The project will be completed by the fall of 2019.
Recommendation
The resolution be approved.

The Regional Transportation Council has recently approved the last of the funding necessary for the trail system connecting Fort Worth to Dallas. The report says it will be done by 2023 in the Fall.

Here's a .pdf map of the whole Fort Worth-to-Dallas route, including existing mid-cities and other urban trails:

Re: Greater DFW-area trails
River Legacy Trails are closed in areas due to recent erosion from flooding.
Re: Greater DFW-area trails
I'd love to see permaculture design applied to the whole trail system. While Trinity River flash floods are a particularly daunting challenge, the end result would be the best case scenario.

Grapevine and Plano are each working on plans to have a parallel trail next to the Cotton Belt rail line. The Plano article says it is eventually planned to span the entire Plano-to-DFW Airport corridor.

Re: Greater DFW-area trails
The trail is being designed in tandem with the design of the rail line itself. Trail sections deemed critical will be built during rail line construction since it may be impossible or cost prohibitive to build the trail after the fact. Staff in cities along the line are working to fund sections that were not deemed critical, including the City of Dallas. Ideally the entire trail would be built at the same time as the rail line.

I hope they get it built - would be a great course for like staggered running/bike marathons since it's right around 26 miles.

Re: Greater DFW-area trails
The trail work between Fort Worth and Dallas is now completely funded, with completion of the various segments to be done by 2023. There will be a unified name for the whole trail, but it hasn't been decided on yet. The segments in each city will retain individual names also. Work to connect the 2 Campion Trail sections in Irving is mentioned, and that trail will also connect to the Fort Worth-to-Dallas trail. Also mentioned is work along the trail to shore up portions that have eroded or are prone to erosion.

Frisco has recently completed a connection to the Six Cities Trail, linking it to McKinney, Allen, Plano, Richardson, and Garland. It is along and near Rowlett Creek.

A survey was put out for feedback on a couple possible names/logos.

I strongly prefer the Discovery logo, but the Trinity name is better. I went with Discovery though. I love me some minimalism, but the Trinity logo wouldn't be out of place for a life insurance company or a credit union or something... Nothing wrong with the work behind it, but that sort of design doesn't really fit for a trail. I should also note the designs aren't final but act as a base for the eventual final design.

The powers that be should name it the Arkikosa Trail.

The voting results are out and it will be called the DFW Discovery Trail and feature the nature focused signage similar to what's seen on the left hand side here:

DC-22-04882 is the current lawsuit filed by attorney Philip Kingston and his client Gadberry Construction against the City of Dallas and the Circuit Trail Conservancy. If you are interested in such things like trails in Dallas it pulls back the curtain on the shadowy world of contracts and construction. A real shame things like this need to be this way. If anyone wonders why other cities in North Texas can build out trails and Dallas cannot just look up the lawsuit.

Could you give a quick summary for those of us not in the loop?
