West End: Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum

Postby willyk » 27 Oct 2016 22:27

So far, it has raised more than $43 million of the expected $61 million budget. Construction will begin when the goal is reached, with officials expecting the project to take around two years.

The mission appears to be that this will be a national, maybe international, destination.

How is that any different than any other facility like this? I mean founders of museums and/or institutions like this one always want to collect international and national acclaim. They don't start facilities like this saying hey if we can get a couple of local kids every weekend we will be happy. Their mission statements always mention world class facilities etc. I hope they do well mind you but the usual "world class" grandiose statements have been worn thin because for that to happen it has to come from more than a financial standpoint. What makes institutions reach farther is not just a pricey building or donors who write checks but also in the viewpoint, programming and regular operation of the facility. Those aren't things you can necessarily buy.

With regards to museums, has there been any further talk about the proposed South Asian Musuem? That is a vital lot to fill in. With that, 2000 Ross, Flora and Hall tower underway, there will be a few less ugly surface lots in our CBD.

There isn't a general West End thread anymore... So placing this here...

It appears that some of the West End Smart District improvements were introduced. New kiosk is in front of Wild Bill's .

The thing to remember about these kiosks is they are not about only the visual part you see here. They are also replacing the street lights and both with the street lights and the kiosks the neighborhood will have free wifi and all kinds of sensors for measuring noise and air quality. Two things that have been proven to link to crime and health of the surrounding community.

I see that construction permits have been filed, with an expected start of October (take that with a grain of salt though as it doesnt always come true)

It sounds like they are doing what the Arts District did. Start building before the total fundraising amount has been reached cause the bank will loan them the money they need and by the time it opens they can finish raising the funds. In the Arts Districts case, they had some shortfalls but I imagine the Holocaust museum will get the money wrapped up once donors see the money at work.

Someone posted in the comments on one of the stories about taking the Robert E Lee Statue down that they should give the statue to this museum... I thought it sounded like a really good idea... really turning lemons into lemonade.

Official groundbreaking event on October 10 at 9:30am at 300 N. Houston Street. Thought they had one of these already but here it is.

This is an exciting project in its own right.

In addition, this corner of downtown will become a nice destination for visitors with the proximity of this museum, the Sixth Floor, Dealey Plaza, the Memorial, the Red Courthouse, the Bryan Cabin, the Aquarium and hopefully someday, the South Asian Museum. A low key alternative to the Arts District.

The way I look at it is that with the Klyde Warren Park expansion, the West End (and Perot museum) will become an extension of the Arts District.

Ross Avenue, that's a street you might think would be full of people walking around enjoying all the stuff in and between The West End and the Arts District.

I always thought the Ripley's Believe it or Not should move from that random Grand Prairie location to the West End near the aquarium.

The Arts District already considers Perot Museum to be in their district, they include it on their website and on physical maps for the Dallas Arts District.

...supporting my view of this ultimately being an extension of a much larger district.

That facade looks a lot shinier than it does in the renderings.

That it does! I wonder if what's shown in the renderings factors in weathering which could happen over time.

It is, but typical of a construction site like this they build a mockup wall to test materials. There's also one across from the new Hall Arts tower and hotel on Ross Ave.

Glad too see another intersection being filled in. Does anyone have any more renderings of what the final building is supposed to look like? My Google skills are apparently lacking and didn't pull in any new images.

I like the contrast of new vs old here. I also like that wood look on the top of the building....I assume that's what that is.

I don't know why, but I have the impression that top is copper, not wood. Maybe I saw that on the mock-up across the street, maybe I dreamed it.

Might be a dumb question, but what is that building going up to the left, in the mid background? Looks to be on the seventh floor now. Is that part of the Holocaust museum too?
