As if we don't have enough numbers to remember around here, another Area Code is coming to Dallas: 945.
Dallas' 3 Area Codes, 214, 469, and 972, will not be enough as of next year. Houston just got a 4th one in the last couple of years.
Existing surrounding codes include:
* 682/817 - Fort Worth
* 940 - NW of Fort Worth, including Denton
* 430/903 - east/NE of Dallas, including Tyler and Sherman/Denison
* 254 - SW of Fort Worth

Dallas to get another Area Code
Re: Dallas to get another Area Code
Been a while since we got a new one, anybody remember when Mayor Kirk wanted to keep 972 out of Dallas?

I think I'd forgotten that. Not surprised that anyone felt that way back then. Now it's not a big deal.

Re: Dallas to get another Area Code
The 945 area code is due to roll out this week. It will overlay the existing area served by the 214/469/972 area codes.

Wow, didn't know that. Seems like new area codes popped up like crazy back in the day.

Since groups of phone numbers aren't assigned in such big groups as were done in the past (1000 numbers at a time now -vs- 10,000 numbers at a time before), new area codes aren't needed as often.

A lot of the concern about number exhaustion has been alleviated by the proliferation of low-cost (compared to a traditional PBX/switchboard) business VOIP solutions making it easier for smaller businesses to set up extensions instead of needing dedicated lines/numbers for each employee, and the general reduction in home landlines.
Even though the 945 area code is now "available" no new 945 numbers have been allocated. Will be interesting to see who gets the first one lol

Re: Dallas to get another Area Code
According to this article, Dallas' new 945 area code is expected to have available numbers until 2034. We shouldn't hear anything about any additional area codes here for quite a while.
