Ferguson Road Initiative

Postby itsjrd1964 » 22 Dec 2018 22:47

This 20-year-old organization has been pushing for change, improvement, and better quality-of-life along this part of east/far-east Dallas. An old run-down motel was closed and torn down. A troubled apartment complex is now seeing new life as housing for senior veterans. Another space, spanning 4 acres, will be the site of a farmed lot with fresh food for nearby residents. A former church is in the process of becoming a community center. The lot that contained the motel and other land will be the site of White Rock Hills Park; it will have a playground, amphitheater, a looping walking trail, as well as a later phase with a recreation center. The initial phase will be ready late next year. David Weekley homes is set to build a new townhome community just to the west of the park site. Since the Initiative's work began, crime in the area has dropped by nearly half.

I see this neighborhood daily in my commutes to/from work, and out running errands. It is good to hear that there have been citizens in the area that have taken active roles in trying to effect change and improvement there. There is much that still needs to be done, but what has been done already is a very good start.

So much potential in this road renovation, could easily become the model for urban neighborhood sustainability.
