When might downtown Dallas finally get a big-name grocery store? 'There are conversations'

The stores are planned to roll out across the country after a debut on Manhattan's Upper East Side and elsewhere in New York. It's still unclear in which cities they may land.

"They're launching in New York first and we'll see how that does," Austin said. "There are conversations."

In an email, Austin clarified that the comments on stage came from conversations with a broker representing Whole Foods in the DFW area and that the company is still focused on New York City. There's no sign of Whole Foods coming into downtown quite yet. Whole Foods did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

But the question stokes a wider conversation about bringing more walkable amenities to a downtown increasingly being seen as a place to live. While there are plenty of grocery stores in other nearby neighborhoods for downtown residents to use, the major grocers have yet to break into the highway loop.
