The new second season of "The Umbrella Academy" takes place in Dallas in the early 1960's (multiple years, 1960-64 since the characters time travel and are dropped off in different years). Some nice shots of the Downtown skyline in the background, while it's filmed in a neighborhood that resembles Old East Dallas or Deep Ellum in the 60s.(obviously filmed elsewhere). Part of the plot involves the Russians invading Dallas. Interesting so far.

I think so too, but we'll see. I'm on episode 2. If they follow the whole country fried redneck president killin' stereotype, it might be negative exposure. Anecdotally, many people I know think that "Dallas" killed JFK and it was a conservative redneck who did it, when Lee Harvey Oswald wasn't even from here, lived all over the country, barely lived in Dallas at all, and was a Socialist/Communist who defected to Russia and lived there for years. But, most will pin it on the city itself.

I won't spoil it, but some of these fears come true.

However.... they did a good job of researching Dallas and make local references like Neiman Marcus, various streets, Oak Lawn, and even feature a scene in the "Ports O' Call" tiki lounge that existed above the Southland building (now the Sheraton Downtown), although it is just called "Tiki Lounge" and the Southland Life Building they use in the show is much shorter and looks nothing like the real thing. Kudos for effort, though.

They shot here for two days, know a friend who worked on set. Long days 14-15 hour days to get everything in, but they wrapped all the shots and stuff they needed within 48 hours of arriving in dallas.

...you'd think ATT could through a little content production into it's homebase. Maybe once the ATT HQ playground reaches full stride, it will be the backdrop to some HBO scenes.

I'm losing confidence that Headington will ever muster up a red carpet premier and screening venue for film, but now that ATT is a major content provider, Dallas will finally get a venue capable of holding onto a slot in the first run, A-List entertainer PR rotation after LA, NYC, Chicago and Miami. Dallas is enough of a city, now, to keep a short visit from going stale.

For more on this thought line, I recommend the book "Dallas 1963" by Bill Minutaglio. It really places you in the environment of the city at the time. While Lee Harvey Oswald was definitely an outlier, even potentially trying to assassinate a right-wing political figure prior to the Kennedy assassination, the climate of the city was extremely hostile.

I'll check it out, but what bothers me is that this hostility has and DOES exist across the nation. It's not a Texas problem or a Southern problem like many like to portray it. It's a national problem and always has been. Our nation was literally built on it. Media tends to portray it as a Southern problem only.

I finished S2 of The Umbrella Academy and it was a lot of fun! It's silly superhero shenanigans, so if that's not your glass of sweet tea here are a couple of the notable Dallas establishing shots. No spoilers here I promise, the first screenshot is from the first five minutes of the season. You can make out the 1963 Dallas skyline edited into the background with the Magnolia building clearly visible.

This second screenshot is a look at Dealey plaza with all of uptown edited out.

So, they went through the trouble of editing out Uptown but left the clocktower on Old Red (which wasn't there in the 1960s)? ;)

Also, they need to get that Hertz sign out of storage and reinstall it. https://www.dallasobserver.com/news/six ... de-7135591

The newest Microsoft Flight Simulator released a couple days ago. The game utilizes Bing satellite data to generate the globe along with an AI that interprets that data to create its best estimate as to what buildings/roads/landscapes look like.

The game also utilizes Bing photogrammetry data for particular cities which are much more accurate than the autogenerated buildings, but the number of cities Bing has photogrammetry data for is relatively limited compared to something like Google Earth. If you've ever explored Dallas in Google Earth you know its a pitch perfect recreation.

That being said, Microsoft Flight Simulator does not have photogrammetry data for Dallas--yet. The developers said they plan to continually update the world data, so I suspect Dallas will get an update eventually, but in the meantime it's been a trip exploring generic off-brand Dallas. Strangely, the only building that is actually modeled is the American Airlines center.

This is the view from reunion tower, which is not actually present.

The AI seemed to think Fair Park had a building in the middle of the esplanade.

From way up above the city begins to resemble the relief maps at the downtown Dart stations.

On the flipside, the game actually does have the photogrammetry data for Fort Worth and it looks absolutely gorgeous. This should give you an idea of how incredible Dallas could look when it gets updated in the game.

Two Texas cities make Forbes list of best places to retire in 2020

https://www.chron.com/local/article/Two ... 527114.php

Dallas was praised for these attractive qualities for a retirement spot, according to Forbes:

Adequate number of physicians per capita
Relatively low cost of living
Vibrant culture scene
Median home price of $219,000, 21 percent below the national median
Lack of state income and inheritance tax
Good climate
Good air quality
Low risk of climate change
Very bikeable, somewhat walkable
High ranking on Milken list of best cities for successful aging

The only drawback for living in Dallas in your golden years is the serious crime rate, which is above national average.

What a profoundly stupid article...

San Francisco has 4 times the population of Dallas, but only 60% of land area. Of course they have more polling places "in a similar-sized area" than Dallas. Also, that "one" polling place at the AAC had capacity for thousands more than a SF polling location, with far better accessibility to DART (which is free to ride on election day) than a lot of the neighborhood locations it replaced.

Also, to vote in-person in SF, you have to go to your assigned polling place to vote, regardless of how close it is to your school or workplace, and they only have one early-voting location for the whole City. Compare that to Dallas, where voters can vote at any polling location in the county, either early or on election day.

Anyway, based on the Dallas County election results, the "voter suppression" caused by a supposed lack of polling places clearly isn't working...

Huh? SF population = 883k. Dallas = 1.345M.

The big problem is that the map for Dallas only shows the early voting locations. There were a lot more open on election day.

Also all registered voters can get mail-in ballot.
Has been like that since I moved here more that 10 years ago.
Never have had to vote in person.
I went to the polling station only to drop off the mail-in ballot since I did not trust USPS to deliver in time this year.
I had the option to drop it off at any polling place.

A statistics that might surprise TNWE.
Number of polls in San Francisco = 588
Number of polls in Dallas = more than 456

https://sfelections.sfgov.org/vote-your-polling-place
https://www.dallascountyvotes.org/wp-co ... ons-43.pdf

Whether or not there are sufficient polls depends upon not just the number of places, but also on the number of machines at each place. Additionally, I do not recall anyone complaining about how long the lines were, in Dallas or San Francisco.

Apparently someone read the comment I posted to the article. Because now...

Editor’s note: This story has been edited to include a visual comparison between Atlanta’s day-of polling locations and San Francisco’s, and remove a comparison of Dallas’s and San Francisco’s. An earlier version of this story mistakenly included Atlanta’s and Dallas’s early voting locations.

Just FYI, I think that's the number for Dallas County, not the city. Obviously a lot of the county is not in the city, and the city extends into five counties (which I believe is the most in the U.S.).

Yes, it was Dallas County. Yes, it was also San Francisco County.
Check out my SF link, at the very bottom of the page you should read,
"City and County of San Francisco".

I just believe in comparing apples with apples, not apples with oranges.

Yeah, I just grabbed the numbers from the wiki inset on the google results page, and it apparently gave MSA pop for the SF search but city pop for the Dallas search.

Doesn't change the fact that the original article was fraught with factual errors and only got published because it went along with the "Texas Bad" narrative.

I would think they might film a unique line for each major metro area and then play that specific ad in that geographic area. With technology it's much easier to target ads that way these days. They probably picked a restaurant off a list without too much thought, hence the neighborhood name gaffe.

From one baiting of clicking which I didn't note down by URL today:

"HouseFresh, an indoor air quality advisory website, ranked the neighborhoods Americans are most interested in moving to [...by collecting] Zillow sales listings from America’s 100 most populous cities and ranked the neighborhoods based on the number of times users viewed the listings in the area." With 36,113 daily views, Northeast Dallas currently tops the rest of the Zillow taxonomy of US neighborhoods, some of whom are far smaller in square mileage, one should beware. It's not just Lakewood plus Lake Highlands, I'd imagine.
