KERA set to take on management of WRR

Postby itsjrd1964 » 15 May 2022 09:44

A pleasant surprise and one of the best possible outcomes. The City's Arts and Culture committee will vote Monday, followed by a City Council vote next month, to let KERA parent North Texas Public Broadcasting take on management of WRR 101.1 FM. In the agreement, the City will remain owner and for the next 7 years, WRR will remain at Fair Park.

While the article doesn't give specifics, it sounds like the next future step would be for North Texas Public Broadcasting to acquire WRR in full and move its operations in with those of KERA radio/TV and KKXT-FM. Either way, it sounds assured that classical fans in DFW won't lose WRR anytime soon.

Well, interesting enough Apple is making big investments in giving Classical music its own app due to its unique needs in the wider field of music so there is a definite market for appealing to classical music lovers even if it's not as trendy as pop music anymore. It seems like it makes sense for it to eventually move out of Fair Park to me. Those buildings need tenants but I am not sure holding this radio station here longer is doing Fair Park any favors either.

The Dallas city council unanimously agreed to let management of WRR be taken over by KERA's parent North Texas Public Broadcasting. The change takes effect in December. Meanwhile, the City and NTPB will begin work on getting the FCC to convert WRR's license from commercial to non-commercial.

This seems like the best way forward for WRR and it does seem like they should eventually move out of Fair Park but I will let KERA make that decision when it comes. For now, it's not necessary for them to vacate a building that doesn't have an obvious use if they were to leave tomorrow.
