Did they already tear up the parking lot for that? I haven't been to Deep Ellum in a month or two, so did not realize it was progressing that quickly.

Deep Ellum stakeholders share thoughts on incoming office projects

https://www.bizjournals.com/dallas/news ... s_headline

In December, Westdale President and CEO Joe Beard told the Dallas Business Journal that not only would Deep Ellum benefit from more office space, but the project would also provide much needed additional parking for the area. The parking deck will be open to the public on nights and weekends.

"We hope it creates a halo effect by bringing in more tech-type companies that may rely on Uber for their business," Beard said in December. "Since the Uber announcement, we've already met with a number of companies who have begun looking here. If anything, it's put the neighborhood on the map."

Uber Starts its Hiring Process in Dallas

Uber has laid out its plan for the 3,000 jobs it's bringing to The Epic in Deep Ellum. Here's how to potentially get hired, what to expect with the Uber Dallas hub, and what Uber plans to offer the workforce here.

That is something that needs to be more emphasized and a given with these new developments.
Itll help buy good will with the locals.

I know parking is a big complaint, but there never really seems to be any shortage of people in Deep Ellum. Has the lack of parking really been detrimental to the area?

It's cool that they are doing this rather than just letting the garage waste space on the weekends, I'm just a little indifferent to more parking spaces in Deep Ellum.

Its not impossible, but inconvenient. The shortage of clearly identifieable parking, dealing with parking attendants that are imposters, there's lots of stories.

What's going to happen is that the tight supply of parking is going to be put under more pressure as developments eat up the existing lots. An example would be the large parking lot next to the Bomb Factory which is going to become Stack 2700 Commerce or the Hines project. All the people rushing to make a concert are gonna have a hard time and there will be less spots for everyone else.

Another thing to consider re: parking is the amount of new space that is being created/converted in this area. The Epic will have retail and a hotel. The Uptown 2.0 area, which includes Bottled Blonde and the upcoming Clutch space, will surely see more traffic.

Plus, once Uber moves in, who knows what will be developed on the lots that are still available in that immediate area. I've got to imagine things will continue to sprout up there.

But what will happen to the bath house...

No seriously though the problem is anyone who is a Dallas native will not use the parking at Uber. Who wants to park across Good Latimer and walk all the way down Main Street/Elm or Commerce to their dinner reservations or to meet their friends at the bar. It would work for event parking though whether its concerts at Bomb Factory or things like the Deep Ellum Arts Festival. Certainly places like Brain Dead or Punch Bowl would benefit from this news. Hopefully, they will put up signs.

The large tower appears to be on the land where a building that is currently occupied by '44 Build' sits. They're a pretty cool custom furniture company that does build outs for commercial clients. They have a cool instagram that's worth following (@44dtx), I wonder where they're going to move to. This might be an overflow location for them though as their main residence might be across the street.

Itll be like the southside one in cedars :)

This is the correct way to built tall buildings in deep ellum IMO.
By slowly increasing the height with each additional building instead of plopping a giant one in the middle of a bunch of 1-2 stories. *Cough*Cough* Case Building*

That looks like the Clutch Bar spot. There's a Miami-themed bar going in over there as well, but I think that's slightly west.

The land behind the Traveling Man is the Bath House aka the only gay-oriented bathhouse left in Dallas. They recently assembled all their land into one parcel, I saw it in a planning committee agenda last year. I wondered if they were about to sell but they renovated instead built a new pool area reconfigured some of their spaces etc. They tore down about a third of the previous bathhouse and last I heard was simply realizing the value of parking near the bar scene. I always found it funny that DART built a station dead center between both Dallas gay-oriented bathhouses. The other one closed a few years ago and sits on land Uber could build on if needed.

The photo the OP posted was of the Clutch Bar spot at Good Latimer and Gaston; north of/caddy corner to the Epic development.

Surprising. I figured they'd sell to a developer and the building would be re-developed.

I'm fine with them sticking around though, as the building itself is fitting with the area and it doesn't really feel like an impedence. It's only a matter of time before they eventually re-develop this plot of land though.

Bathhouses have been around for decades and they will either evolve or die off altogether and in this area, they are more likely get pressured to sell. The problem for the bathhouse business itself is they don't tend to appeal to the younger generation so moving to let's say another quieter part of Dallas would be problematic. Their customer base is built around the older generation where freedom to be gay and be yourself wasn't the norm. If they were to move a business like this they would have a hard time getting their customer base to follow them. The other problem is bathhouses were also about seclusion away from too many prying eyes so men could go without being seen and or noticed. Now with Uber across the street and a massively increasing bar and restaurant scene, it could be problematic for those afraid of being seen going in and out.

Not to mention that with online dating being pretty prevelant, there's less of a need for a place like this. Much easier to just go online and find what you're looking for.

Newest amusement for Dallas' crazy fun Deep Ellum: axe-throwing bar
A new one of those axe-throwing concepts is coming to Dallas' carrrraziest entertainment zone: Deep Ellum.

Called Whiskey Hatchet, it's a bar-combination-axe throwing place that will open on the southern edge of Deep Ellum, in a warehouse building at 2801 Virgil St., and we are talking not just south of Elm and Commerce, but south of Canton.

http://dallas.culturemap.com/news/resta ... eep-ellum/

This isn't a new concept at this point, but I definitely welcome it to Deep Ellum, especially since they are located a few blocks south of where the current action is.

Punch Bowl Social Closes
In these hard COVID-19 times, closures of bars and restaurants around Dallas are coming fast and furious. But this closure has its own sad tale: Punch Bowl Social, the restaurant and game chain that opened in Deep Ellum in June 2019, has shuttered possibly not just on a temporary basis, but for good.

These landlords gotta be flexible too though; there's an economic hardship that's completely wiping out the customer base for many businesses in the restaurant and hospitality sector.

There's bills in place that may provide aid to these small businesses. Landlords need to realize that forcing mass closures on many tenants isn't good for them either. Stay pat until legislation is passed; help your business partner out. Especially those that have been good Tenants.

I fully expect the economy to come back roaring once we get through the worse part of virus.

Landlords still have to repay their loans and keep insurance policies active. Are any banks freezing mortgages? Are insurance providers freezing payments?
The effect of this crisis on the market will ripple all the way up the food chain.

I agree that this is a generational opportunity to re-evaluate laws, ordinances, tax structures, social norms, etc.

Yeah well Grindr was crazy busy during the lockdown cause no one was allowed to leave home and gay men can get pretty "frustrated" being told they can't go to the bars.

It sounds like he has a pretty decent plan considering what the venue is. The reality is we can abolish liquor all day but it won't stop people from drinking. The same with a space like this. While bathhouses may seem out of style they still are a legitimate business I think deserves to operate within guidelines. Plus that place was majorly renovated recently so it's probably a lot easier to clean than it used to be.

I saw a sign saying "Citizen" was coming to Deep Ellum post COVID-19 (that is actually what the sign said). I'm guessing this is the same Citizen that is currently in Uptown and I assume that this is a relocation and not a second location?

Anyway, I didn't get a chance to snap a picture, but it was in the same area as Bottled Blonde.

Well interesting enough a Austin club owner has bought three parcels on Maple and is turning them into bars/clubs. He bought the Stoneleigh P and the two neighboring parcels and is already renovating them. Stoneleigh P he is not messing with at this time since it has a neighborhood following.

Another one bites the dust.
Dallas Comedy House Closing After 11 Years of Shows, Festivals and Laughs

A Dallas comedy institution just announced it will be closing its red doors for the last time.

Amanda Austin, the owner and founder of The Dallas Comedy House (DCH) in Deep Ellum, announced on her Facebook page that she's made the difficult decision to the close the comedy theater.

"I hope it's more sweet than bitter for you, as it is for me," Austin wrote. "I have laughed more during this DCH journey than most people will laugh in 10 lifetimes, and I wouldn't have it another way."
