Lake Highlands: misc. developments

Postby itsjrd1964 » 17 Nov 2018 00:47

In recent days, I noticed while commuting, the former National Guard Armory on Northwest Hwy. next to the Dallas PD northeast division, has a work project sign in front of it. The city is having the building converted into the new headquarters for the Parks and Recreation department. I didn't get to read the finer print to see anything more about it, especially a timeline before the completion.

7-Eleven had a grand opening at an existing, re-done store location this past week. The Walnut Hill/Audelia location now shows off 7-Eleven's "evolution" concept, with new features and an all-new look. It really looks nice, I saw it Thursday. In the front right corner, there is fresh-ground coffee, Slurpees, soda fountain with a touch-screen (almost like a Coke Freestyle fountain), and a smoothie dispenser. There is also a beer-tap-like fountain, but I didn't get a very close look at what all the drink choices were there. The cooler has many drink choices not found in most 7-Elevens. The back right corner has a walk-in beer cooler. A Laredo Taco counter is in the back left corner, along with the usual cooler-display food and roller-grill snacks adjacent. Cashiers are at the front left. The store didn't need to add space for the Laredo Taco and other additions and changes, as there had been a training center and classroom in the building previously. An indoor mural and outdoor mural are nice surprises; they were done by a local muralist. The snack and merchandise shelves are different, with aisles not as long but a bit taller. The most striking feature about them is the under-shelf LED light accents, which really make the items stand out. It leaves no question as to what they are and how much there is to choose from.

The store was quite busy Thursday, with the Laredo Taco counter getting the most attention.

Overall, I like it. I wish though, that it wasn't off my commuting route so much, but it was worth the drive.
