Fun fact. I work for AT&T and back when we were AT&T Wireless (our own entity), we consolidated our Dallas offices at Legacy but on the east side across from EDS. Looks like where USAA is now. I know it was really sad being that far out of town at the time.

Glad central Dallas is our home now. #attemployee

Let's all be glad AT&T also focused on making their home attractive to new talent. Not only leave Downtown but they are seriously reinvesting in Downtown more than other property owners in Downtown. Other properties add a space for a ground floor restaurant and call it a day. AT&T is making itself into a Downtown activity center.

Well said. AT&T is doing wonders for our urban core by not only just staying put, but also re-investing into the area, which is giving other businesses and people more confidence in the city and more of a reason to stick around. I'm extremely pleased with what I'm seeing from this development and can't wait until it's completed.

You know... there's been so much happening in downtown I keep forgetting about this deal. ATT is spending a lot of money to build a pedestrian environment. Remarkable even if the result is average.

It looks like it will be very nice and welcome addition to that side of downtown, still think some of those surface lots nearby need to be converted to some residential. Hopefully this will attract some interest.

I walked through the AT&T lobby today for the first time in maybe years and realized that the Golden Boy was gone.

I don't remember any mention of removing him or moving it to another location. Any info on this?

Here is some info....

http://www.mrlocalhistory.org/goldenboy/

Game of Thrones Dethrones Golden Boy

In early 2019, the seat of 1,000 swords has replaced a glimmering Golden Boy that has stood in the lobby since 2009. It was noted by an AT&T spokesperson, “As part of the ongoing process to bring the AT&T Discovery District to life, Golden Boy is stepping off his platform for a few months while we remodel the lobby of Whitacre Tower,” “He’ll return to our campus in the second half of 2019.” It is said that he was taken out to make room for the Game of Thrones “Iron Throne” – go figure!

I would love to see the Golden Boy take its rightful place outdoors! I wonder if it will be truly outdoors or incorporated into one of the projects like the food hall they are building across the way.

^hahahaha I was going to say The Sundance Square of Dallas!!! It'll be nice if "Discovery" District turns into a memorable place people seek out, like Rockefeller Center, or Sundance Square. Since ATT's Spirit of Communication is naked, does anyone think the righteous folks of Dallas will pitch a fit and call it pornography?

Yeah, when the previous executives decided to pull him off the building in New York decades ago and bring him down to eye level for other AT&T campuses they had him neutered because they were also afraid of how scandalous it would be close up. It wasn't just a Southern thing.

Take a look at the two silver Art Deco statues at the head of the reflecting pool at Fair Park that the city recently restored—no modesty there.

Actually, I think the statues at Fair Park have been made more modest than their originals. Mind you also one of the supposed reasons for removing those two and the Woolfus at Fair Park was calls by religious folk to take down such scandalous artwork.

I've about had it with the local "religious" folk taking things down (referring to First Baptist).

Re: AT&T Discovery District

Let's be honest though when it comes to my above statement religious reasons was also a cop out for officials who were looking to get rid of things they didn't want to repair or maintain. The Woolfus was also supposedly taken down for the metal for the War effort. All those things really could have been welcomed by officials looking to rid themselves of expensive maintenance and or repair projects they deemed troublesome. At those times Downtown and Fair Park were seen as outdated relics so stripping them for parts and reducing costs made sense to shrinking budgets and the less enthusiastic public who was looking at places like the far-flung suburbs as the future and not historical references to our past in the old cities.

Good update. Mostly, and perhaps most newsworthy, I'm relieved that AT&T plans to keep the Interurban Building and fill the retail space with a Cowboys Fit gym. Even counting the old Urban Market, I didn't realize there was 20,000 square feet of retail there.

Still no indication of Golden Boy being placed outside though.

Much of the time, the giant display wall will be used to showcase digital art. For special events, it can do everything from showing classic moves to hosting Dallas Cowboys watch parties.

I'm pretty sure this was discussed in this very thread, glad to see it being mentioned in this article. If they actually follow through with this, this would create a great atmosphere on game days.

The Gym seems like a great option for that space for sure. It was never going to be a good accessible retail space for most retailers. I would think even Trader Joes would probably suffer there.

I think this will be a game changer for downtown. Downtown has improved by leaps and bounds in the last few years, and actually feels like a real downtown at times, but it has been missing that central gathering place where residents and visitors can gather. I hope this will be that place.

This looks really cool and may indeed be a game-changer. It might be nit-picking, but is anyone else a bit troubled by the placement of the giant screen with relation to the trees? The trees seem to do a really good job of blocking views of the giant screen.

Re: AT&T Discovery District

Posted: 18 Jul 2019 14:32

I think the question is how big will the trees be when things reopen? The trees they used to have there were pretty damn tall and the shade was nice but nothing was growing beneath them due to the coverage being so dense.

I thought this image was interesting. It was clearly done to show the brightness level of the screen in "sleep mode" (after 10pm or whatever), but the first thing I noticed was the absence of rendering people.

Screen Shot 2019-07-18 at 2.50.30 PM.jpg

No doubt this will be a popular gathering space, but there's always a chance the plaza will be this dead during the day at times. Even Klyde Warren Park has its sleepy moments.

Is there anything nearby that it is a good candidate for a residential conversion?

Re: AT&T Discovery District

I don't know about residential conversion, but the Dallas Public Library should be a pet project of ATT - upgraded and expanded into the public institution setting the standard for excellence.

Discovery District's One hundred million+ dollar budget is a worthwhile investment for ATT benefiting the stock holders and the city; the corporate initiative to build a physical space downtown that attracts and helps retain talent has compelling opportunity to include the Dallas Public Library in the infrastructure upgrades as well as an obligation to the municipality.

I'd like ATT to endow the downtown library so it becomes the innovative information and literary art sharing institution evolving the concept and format of a public library efficient and mindful to match the new ways people have available to read and discover literary arts and conduct research. The downtown library should expand as a museum facility to restore, maintain and display historic books and documents -- the city's copy of the Declaration of Independence being a cornerstone, of course.

Including the library building in ATT urban campus concept would be a corporate investment as much (or more) as a philanthropic endeavor, but that company should not be the only local business contributing to the creation of a public institution handling the municipal obligation of a library --- Texas Instruments played a vital role in the "information era" and has an obligation to make sure the library can function as a public history museum.

It's not just North Texas businesses that have an obligation and wherewithal to help set up the public library for the new millennium, North Texas individuals share the philanthropic obligation to give ---- starting with the Crow Family. I realize Harland Crow recently had built a wing onto his Highland Park estate to house this collection, but this is a collection of pieces that belong to the public....

The holdings now consist of approximately 14,000 books and 8,500 manuscripts and span five centuries of exploration and discovery, politics, conflict, science, intellectual thought, and the arts. Its strengths include the colonial settlements in North America by European nations, the American Revolution, the American Civil War, the Presidency, the Supreme Court, and the development of the United States west of the Mississippi River in the 19th century.

Just like the DMA expanded with an art restoration work-group, so should the library.

The Thomas Building would've made an excellent residential address right in the middle of the AT&T Discovery District. Too bad city leaders didn't have the balls to save it.

That building was torn down years ago to make way for more surface parking for the neighboring insurance office building.

Honestly, I would like to see AT&T buy out the old federal reserve which is a data center right now and turn it into a performance venue, media & technology center. They could then build dare I say it a parking garage that serves the insurance building and events with ground floor restaurant and or retail. Plus it would allow AT&T to expand the campus towards City Hall and the Library and build a brand new building that completes the AT&T district from Young street to Commerce.

"Coming live to you in beautiful Downtown Dallas from the AT&T Federal Theater and Technology Center..."

The story? It was the last downtown building tied to the cotton industry. Adding about 20 spots in a parking lot was more valuable (could have made a nice boutique hotel). But all is not lost; they decorated the perimeter of the lot with architectural relics to preserve history.

Dallas Cowboys to add fitness club location in downtown Dallas

The Dallas Cowboys announced Thursday that they will open a new Cowboys Fit in the AT&T Discovery District in downtown Dallas.

The 20,000-square-foot fitness center will open in the winter and will be developed in partnership with global fitness developer Mark Mastrov. This will be the third development of the franchise.

AT&T's new downtown Dallas campus will have a place for its historic statue

https://www.dallasnews.com/business/rea ... ric-statue

Funny....I could have sworn somebody on this forum actually asked that question.

The first thing I asked when I walked into AT&T's downtown Dallas headquarters this week was "Where's Golden Boy?"

The giant gilded statue — usually hard to miss — is gone.

For almost a decade, the 24-foot-tall figure called the Spirit of Communications has been the first thing you'd see when entering AT&T's Commerce Street building.

For those not paying for the DallasNews like me, the article simply says Golden Boy will make a promised reappearance in a prominent position. There is a lot of fluff in the article, as usual, mentioning the rest of the project but nothing this forum hasn't known for months now.
