What does the status "determined" mean?

It means the FAA has approved it for the "determined" height. (in this case, 620', 34' shorter than was requested.)

There's a lot going on with that interior!!.. but I definitely hope it's successful and look forward to checking it out. Any word on the concept, menu? It seems so hush-hush.

I agree, this is a great looking space, and it looks huge! I don't know if Dibs on Victory opened yet, but hopefully the two establishments can complement each other and create some synergy in the area. It helps that The Union and Happiest Hour aren't terribly far either.

It looks like fun, but it also looks LOUD. It's getting to the point where I'm honestly considering bringing earplugs everywhere I go because those high ceilings, wide open spaces, concrete, exposed ductwork, and complete lack of soft surfaces makes everything in Dallas SO. LOUD. (Yeah I sound like a grandma, but my fellow mid-30s friends complain about this trend in interiors too.)

They have the infrastructure, now they just need to get some people down there. That will be the hard part. I pray that they are successful this time.

Thanks for sharing the photos of Hero. I agree it looks really slick and huge. I worry that it will just feel cavernous and empty a majority of the time, but perhaps there is some "build it and they will come" aspect to this. It would be cool if Victory Park was the de facto game day hang, not just for AAC events, but football/baseball/soccer/etc.

I feel like Happiest Hour already has that going for it somewhat.

Some kind of interesting pedestrian bridge over Field Street would help connect uptown with Victory and also act as a feature for that area. There is not a very friendly way to walk from Uptown to Victory without feeling like frogger.

It's not super friendly, but a bridge seems excessive. Plus this area is still filling in, so the cohesiveness will only get better over time.

Plus there really aren't that many people walking here to begin with. I don't think adding a bridge will change much. It will certainly make the walk more friendly, but the bigger issue is that there still isn't much going on here, so we need to fill in those holes first.

Please, no... It'll be like that useless monstrosity they built over Harry Hines blvd.

There are plenty of other means they can use to calm traffic and allow safer access between the two areas. Cars don't 'need' to go 45mph through there.

I don't know if this was intentional or not, but Hero picked a great time to open. I didn't get a chance to head out there tonight, but it seemed like lots of people were in the area for Dirk's last game, so I'm sure the place got a lot of exposure today.

Went to Victory Plaza during the Mavs game last night and it was packed! Lots of people in Hero, lots of people hanging out in the plaza just watching the game on the big screen.

With the Union development, it's now actually a pretty nice walk from Downtown, through Klyde Warren, past the Union, and into Victory Park. Really enjoyable and there's never an area where it feels like you're walking in no man's land.

You could even start the a loop in Deep Ellum, walk past the dog park to the Farmer's Market, up Harwood to Klyde Warren, to Victory Park, down through the West End, and back to Deep Ellum via Main Street (especially once the East Quarter is done) and never feel like you're in a sea of parking lots/garages.

Stopped by Hero this evening around 6:30pm, just to check it out. As you can probably tell from the pictures, the space is huge and has a very big prescense in the neighborhood, which I realy like. The bar area is on the northern side (closer to the AAC) and is the area with the large screen. The space was mostly indoors with the side facing the AAC being completely exposed, so you still get to enjoy the outdoors a little bit while still keeping the comfort of being inside (my first thought was it might be popular for people wanting to grab a drink during the unbearable summer months).

There were some people eating/drinking there today, but, as expected, it was pretty slow. I really do hope they are successful, as they have really brought something amazing to the neighborhood, but only time will tell I suppose. I also saw the new "South Victory" branding advertised all over the area, along with a few "SoVi" signs too. I can tell the area is getting slightly more lively every time I go, but it still has a long ways to go.

Went to Dirks final home game two nights ago and HERO was freaking slammed. Looked like a cool spot and i want it to work desperately.. between hero, dibs, happiest hour and the henry, youve got some cool hangout spots and some good resturants as well in the area. HERO is a big deal for the overall game day vibe if it works out.

Indeed, that's a pretty decent amount of places, and most of them are brand new too. I did also walk by Dibs on Victory and it looked like it was open, but it was completely empty.

In addition to the places you listed, there is also "Shooters", which has a completely different vibe, but it still is a bar in the vicinity. I've never personally been, so I don't know what it's like, but it would be nice to see them open up their patio area a little bit more.

Yeah no on South Victory. Good luck trying though.

As much as I typically loath such silly attempts at re branding (SoGood = Barf), I'm kinda okay with this one. I never liked how we put the word 'Park' in something that isn't a park (Victory 'Park')... Just like we put the word 'Garden' in something that's not a garden (Belo Garden, Main Street Garden, etc). This is kinda righting a wrong of the past.

So, even though it's obviously a marketing ploy, I kinda hope it sticks...

Garden is used correctly in those place names. Garden does not strictly mean something like a vegetable garden.

Normally I cringe at these rebranding efforts, but I'm actually on board with South Victory. It's a good way to let people know things have changed down there. Also, as muncien said, they are trying to fix a past mistake. Also, they had a ton of signage around the area to promote the new name, so it has a much better chance of sticking than some of the other renaming efforts.

Not big enough of an area to split further into North/South. Also, does anyone else get a weird, slight confederate vibe from the name "Victory South?" It's not a big deal, but the name change is just weird.

Can we just rebrand entirely? 'Victory' is so contrived...

This string of posts is ridiculous.

South Victory clearly means Victory Park Lane south of the AAC.

The area is definitely large enough to delineate a north and south. Folks here fawn over “LoMac” and “Lowest Greenville.” How are those any different?

Hopefully I’m in the majority when saying that literally no one has images of the CSA when hearing the branding “South Victory.”

If the new branding gives the area some positive publicity, we should be happy.

The difference...? LoMac Lower Greenville are nick-names the people came up with on their own, South Victory is a branding effort attached to a marketing campaign. One is natural, one is contrived.

I went to Cinepolis last night to see Avengers and my friends live nearby in Gable Park17. I told them about the name change and I doubt they will make the switch in their heads. This group was mostly people who just moved to Dallas within the last year so they have no love for the Victory Park name nor do they know of its trouble back when Hillwood initially opened it. It will take years of conditioning to wipe peoples brains of the old name particularly when the change is so similar.

I have to disagree that simply because “the people” establish a nickname on their own that it is prima facie “natural.”

My prior post referred to “Lowest Greenville” and not “Lower Greenville.” I will certainly concede that the latter is “natural” but there’s no way to convince me that “Lowest Greenville” is. I believe both names were developed by “the people.”

I consider it a sign of progress that we have moved on to criticizing the rebranding and not the redevelopment itself.

I certainly like all the new stuff in SoVi / VP / West Uptown / Lowest Mac / Almost Harwood.

Went to Hero for the Stars final game against Nashville. The entire place was tuned to the game and everyone was watching it on the edge of their seats. Two things really stuck out to me.

First, they had the windows open in the northern half of the bar, all along the east side next to the plaza, and on the south side that looks down Victory Park Ln. The effect this created was an incredible cross ventilation breeze that made it feel like I was sitting on a beach at night.

Second, the atmosphere in the bar was the closest thing I’ve ever felt (at a sports bar) to actually replicating the feeling of being inside the arena where the game is being played. Hero felt like an extension of AAC that night (albeit with better food and cheaper drinks).

I know many have said it already, but this feels like a game changer for the neighborhood. It’s unlike any other sports bar and the location right next to the stadium contributes mightily to that. Ironically, I think it achieves what the Henry’s motto (over at the Union) claims. It feels like the greatest possible neighborhood restaurant for a neighborhood that’s supposedly all about sports.

Yeah, I saw their Instagram posts showing the Stars game. The atmosphere looked amazing. Reminded me of World Cup watch parties. I'm not even a sports fan, but I've been telling friends that if there's a game they want to watch we should go to Hero and watch it, haha.

I hung out at S Victory on Friday and it felt nice with steady amounts of people around. We hit up the ramen place, got some Popbars (so good), checked out Hero, hung out at the plaza. I'm already looking forward to going back.

Honestly it's the expanded DART plaza that makes this project exciting to me. Not that I'm expecting anything remotely resembling a park, but something more visually appealing than the side of a parking garage would be a massive improvement.

I also like the use of brick that ties it back to the AAC.
