Debate over McDonald's drive-thru is actually a debate about future of downtown Dallas
City Plan Commission member will 'absolutely not' support permit renewal

One of the most suburban sights in the center of downtown Dallas, yet a fixture there for decades, is at risk of extinction.

A permit allowing the McDonald's at 1000 Commerce St. to operate a drive-thru expired Dec. 8. The fast food restaurant sits just a few blocks away from the city's tallest tower in a largely underdeveloped area of downtown that city leaders and developers hope to transform into a walkable, urban corridor — especially with the soon-to-be-redeveloped Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center a short walk away.

The permit's expiration threatens the rare breed of McDonald's locations in the downtowns of Texas' major urban centers. Neither Austin nor Houston have a downtown McDonald's. Downtown San Antonio has one, but in a historic building near the Alamo and the River Walk tourist attractions; there's no drive-thru.

It's good to know morons on Marilla have solved all the city's major issues and can now deal with this.

Get rid of it! Long overdue.

Other than 7-Eleven, are there any other 24 eateries downtown? It's obviously fulfilling a need.

Why? Take this down plus the Greyhound terminal closing and you have even more dead space in an area of downtown that nobody seems interested in. Yet that is exactly what I expect the city to do.

Removing this and the Greyhound station will make this area more appealing to developers, especially with the new convention center coming. Put McDs in one of the vacant retail spaces downtown. There doesn't need to be a drive-thru location in the CBD of a major city. If you need a drive-thru, go to the one on Riverfront.
