Dallas hotel project combines art and architecture on the south side of downtown

Nov 21, 2016
With just over two months left before the grand opening, developers are rushing to finish the Lorenzo Hotel on the southern edge of downtown Dallas.
The 237-room hotel redo is costing more than $35 million and will turn an ugly duckling of a budget hotel tower into an art-filled modern accommodation.
"We are in the final stretch of the run," said developer Larry Hamilton, whose Hamilton Properties has been working on the project for more than seven years.

The glass looks great! I hope this does well.

Cool, will be nice to see this building active again, I am not sure if I can ever remember when this hotel used to be active.

Tourists will help the neighborhood. This area more than any other will be affected by accommodate Houston train riders. Urban Cowboy yee-haw! Best views in town.

Lol If I'm not mistaken the mechanical bull at the near by Gilley's was the original one used in the Urban Cowboy movie.
Re: Cedars: Hotel Lorenzo
Has anyone seen The Lorenzo in the Cedars? It has vertical running lights- a la Dallas lightning expectations! My friend captured a short video clip, but all I could upload was a snapshot. It was changing from white to fushia.

I saw that the other day when I was driving through! I couldn't see it too well, as I was on 35, but it the color appeared to be blue at the time.
Very cool entrance point into the Cedars neighborhood.

What they need to do is rebuild the Canyon and add a deck park over it to connect the Cedars and Downtown.

That takes mucho dinero

I wonder if there's a plan to change out the birdies with other images, like a rotation of characters over the years.

Nicely done, although I would have to see it in person to be sure.

Nice to see life in the building. I moved from the Cedars half a year ago and was really excited to see this project move forward. Does anyone have any pictures of the pool area? Are Four Corners and the MAC also finished?

I had some drinks at the Lorenzo last night. I was very impressed. The developers really have out done themselves. The interior is great and the street side patio has a great view of downtown. It still looks odd sitting at a high class bar and seeing an empty lot covered in brush across the street. I was kinda creeped out, however, by all the eyes on the TV screens in the main hall. But there is some really good art inside.

Haven't visit this hotel myself but from articles and passing by this hotel frequently, I believe this is an underrated development

At least we have two trendy hotels in the Cedars now. Let's see if any neighboring development makes the Lorenzo more of a wider hotspot than just a cool hotel on an island.

Re: Cedars: Hotel Lorenzo
When driving on the elevated portion of I-45 coming up to Downtown from the south the Lorenzo really makes an impressive statement with its LED lights changing colors ... you can't miss it and it really makes a person wonder what the heck is there. First couple of times I saw it I had to think about it and was ready to exit and go over to check it out! Then realized it was Hotel Lorenzo! If nothing else they've done a good job grabbing one's attention. And from the feedback above, it sounds like they're doing a good job of delivering on the goods as well. Sounds very encouraging for its prospects!

There are a lot of great things happening in this area, and it seems inevitable that infill developments will start to connect it all. Everything on Lamar is pretty solid, then you've got the Lorenzo and soon-to-follow the Ambassador. Four Corners Brewing just moved down there as well if I'm not mistaken. Add that to all the apartments that are going up down there.
There doesn't appear to be too much in the way of retail in that area, is that the next wave of things to come?

The area needs more residential. a corner store would be wonderful.. a grocer even better.

I agree. There is an Urban Market in Southside (basement) and a Smart and Final on Ervay (pretty horrible). A corner store would be great, but at this time due to density, it would have to be on Lamar. Too many open lots on Akard.
