Texas: A Shopping Paradise

Postby Jasimm » 23 May 2019 19:26

Continued from many other forums, and some interest in discussion topics on forum I have decided to move my compilation of upscale/luxury shopping lists to this page. I mostly focus on direct comparisons between Dallas and Houston, as well as Austin and San Antonio. Not meant to be discrediting anyone's city just a fun and insight into the shopping patterns in various metros.

While the selection may be good..I find the shopping experience to be lacking. The entire Mall experience is so played out...it's the same anywhere you go.

What we really need is an outdoor urban shopping experience, with promenades lined with trees and food vendors.

Even the outdoor malls here are awful. The Southlake Towne center and Firewheel mall are honest attempts at the concept but fall short since they are suburban in nature and design.

There needs to be a Texas Rodeo Dr., If you will, for us to be considered a "shoppers paradise"... The Experience needs improvement.

It would face public and private and homeless hurdles, Tivo, but we could eventually get that blend -- which we cannot have if the place is not civic and social -- with mixed-use blocks along a wide tree-lined hill avenue that arches McKinney from the Union over the highway and through the Shraman planning site straight into the West End. As a bonus, it would let the air out of the tires of the Klyde extension as currently planned, which could instead slope up to meet the shopping avenue in some great public vista. Probably a decent subject for an Opolis Blueprint.

West Village already provides this to some extent, so perhaps, as McKinney Ave continues to re-develop, we could just see more and more shops added to the street.
