Shannon Wynne Wants to Rename Oak Lawn Park for Stanley Marcus

Apparently some have another idea, though: "Turtle Creek Park".

I like the idea of honoring Stanley Marcus. The article said he grew up in the Cedars. How about a park there?

The name Turtle Creek Park is kind of a snooze. Agreed, there are plenty of things named Turtle Creek already. What’s wrong with the temp name Oak Lawn Park?

Finally the article says to have a park named after you, you must be dead at least 2 years or 70 years old. So how did we get Clyde Warren Park?

Because Klyde Warren isn't officially a city park, or run by the Parks/Rec Department. Much of the $$$$$ for it was privately raised and isn't being supported by taxpayers.

What's wrong with Oak Lawn park its the actual name of the park when it was built. They changed it to Lee Park when they installed the statue. I don't see why it needs to be changed again. Oak Lawn once covered much of what is Uptown, Turtle Creek and the Medical District. When Parkland moved to Harry Hines they renamed that section. When the development community and the city created Uptown they too stopped calling it as part of Oak Lawn. Oak Lawn is a community the city absorbed in its early days and I don't see why we can't keep Oak Lawn park as a historic name to remember that fact.

There was an opinion piece on the Dallas Voice that accused the Conservancy of spearheading the name change because Oak Lawn is still associated with the LGBT community ("Homo Heights").

1) I don't think the name change is proposed because of homophobia, even though there's a long history of it there, particularly as it relates to the AIDS memorial, but 2) Oak Lawn is no longer associated exclusively with the LGBT community; it has gentrified and it's now just another neighborhood where trendy restaurants like Snooze choose to open.

Still, I find it ridiculous that anyone would think "Oak Lawn Park" is not a good enough name for it when it's the original name and it happens to be in Oak Lawn.

Oak Lawn has gentrified, but I don't think the name itself has quite the appeal that "Turtle Creek" or "Uptown" do, at least not yet.

I'm guessing that's probably the main reason for the opposition for the Oak Lawn name, and I can agree with that.

One last point I forgot to make is that there's already a Turtle Creek Parkway Park, so at what point do you risk causing confusion and even adversely affecting the existing park if both compete for funds, for example. It's rare that Dallas ever protects its history, so the idea of permanently returning the park to its original name has some appeal.

We shouldn't be naming things based on what's trendy at the time because trends come and go (see SoHip and LOL).

Would love to see a big beautiful fountain or water feature where that statute used to be.

One like the big one up north at Armstrong in Highland Park would be awesome. At least the homeless could bathe in the new one.
