Dallas Zoo closing Australian exhibit for planned I-35E construction

by Claire Z. Cardona

https://www.dallasnews.com/news/dallas- ... ia-exhibit
The Dallas Zoo is saying goodbye to the animals in its Australia exhibit as preparations ramp up for the multi-million dollar Southern Gateway expansion along Interstate 35E. ... The design will take I-35E near the zoo from four lanes in each direction, plus a reversible lane, to five lanes each and two reversible lanes, he said. The zoo will not lose any land. ... "We're excited," Streiber said. "It'll be an interesting ... time as we go through it, but in the end it will be a better experience to get here and a nice addition to the entrance and approach to the zoo."

The zoo could bring back its friends from Down Under.

"It's a possibility," Streiber said. "We don't have the specific plans worked out. This is a multi-year construction project. We've got the time and space gives us the flexibility to think about that space."

Has anyone been to the new hippo exhibit? Would love to see some pics and hear more about how it fits in with the rest of the zoo.

"Brew at the Zoo" takes place Friday, Aug. 31. I've been really vocal about Dallas Zoo and Heritage Village hosting adult events like this, so I want this one to be successful. If you have any interest in attending, here is more info:

Dallas Zoo is furloughing 25% of its zoo staff and permanently closing the monorail.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the Wilds of Africa section designed so that a large portion of it can only be seen from the monorail?

Pour one out for the Dallas Zoo McDonalds.

It feels like a silly thing to be bothered by, but fifteen years of watching everything get turned into a grey slurry has been depressing as hell. The zoo mcdonalds was really the last hold out for this sort of 80's/90's corporate kitsch.
It would have been fun to have all those animals visible from the new deck park, but now we get to look forward to enjoying a grey box with an M on it instead.

Well, Mcdonald's is trying to remain relevant to the generation that prefers Starbucks and fresh organic/gluten-free/all natural/local etc. I certainly hated the hut design they have had for decades and was glad to see everyone from McDonalds/Wendys, and JackNBox modernize despite not changing much about the food. Aka putting lipstick on the pig.

An update on this: the zoo has shown us the plans they have for that space in their 2024 bonds request, which converts it into a natural extension of the rest of the zoo.
I'll miss the monorail but I'm sure it was a maintenance nightmare.

They also want to put a parking garage on the empty lot south of the DART tracks.

I miss the big cats of Texas and Australia exhibits. :(
I haven't been back since those and the monorail were removed.

I'm a member of the Dallas Zoo and haven't seen any of this, so thank you for sharing.

Has the monorail been disassembled yet? I wonder if the vehicles will be sold or put into storage.

I haven't been to the Dallas Zoo in a good while, but, from what I understood many if not all monorail vehicles were supposed to have been re-purposed throughout the zoo. Things such as observation decks, incorporated into dining areas/concession stands, and, perhaps some other interactive applications as well.

I wish I had Mark Cuban / Jerry Jones kinda money and I would cut a check for 50 million to the Zoo. Chump change for them but it would make our Zoo a truly "world class" facility.

If the city moved the Argos Southern Star Concrete plant for a private developer in Trinity Groves there's no reason they shouldn't move the WestRock facility for park land that's a million times more useful as an expansion of the zoo.

I can think of a dozen exhibits and facilities that could share this space, but a peafowl aviary is at the top of my list. They used to roam free all along the creek (as far west as Elmwood) and not just Beckley Club Estates where they're seen today. Then a trail connecting Southern Gateway Park to Tama Park just east of here.
