Love Field is planning to add more space for dining/drinkies, including a new Maggiano's restaurant in the terminal. Airport officials say the work may be done by next spring or before summer.

It's quite fascinating that they planned this airport expansion/reorganization and totally miscalculated the sharp rise in traffic which has in turn overloaded all there planned service systems. Not enough parking, food and beverage etc, airport automobile access drop off and pick up. The cities Airport management has to be firing on all cylinders to try to catch up to frankly an airport redesign that increased capacity for flights but missed the mark on new facilities to service the main purpose.
Who was in charge of the studies that told them what they needed when they planned the Revolution Love Field remodel because they failed.

I'd like to think we've reach the point at this airport where air and noise pollution levels can determine capacity potential. Make 2018 the baseline, and as airplanes spew less air and noise, add more gates. Start with 10, 5 domestic and 5 international. something like that.

It seems like they should have maybe added a second-floor area to the main terminal for retail/restaurants. Not huge space but adding a Magianos will not help with morning traffic runs. I imagine the pseudo beverage/snack kiosks are a solution that will help since many people probably are trying to at least get a beverage to drink while waiting. The problem is people would probably buy more if the lines weren't so long for everything. Turning the gallery space and closet into one sit down restaurant will only minorly help capacity issues. I see a proposal for a terminal addition coming down the line that I am sure they are going to avoid for as long as they can.

Just wait till SWA makes Love and all 737-800 base, if its not already. More pax holding in the gate areas.

The construction of the third airport garage, C, is complete and is now open. There are 5300 total spaces there. Officials want to lower rates for parking at the airport garages. There are further plans to move Uber/Lyft pickups from the lower driveway to a designated area in the A garage area. In 2021, work will start on the west runway. Studies are still being considered for a north airport entrance, as well as for a combined airport rental car area.

The DBJ article about the C garage also includes a link to news in recent weeks that parking lot operator The Parking Spot, which already had 2 lots in the vicinity of Love Field, has acquired the space that had belonged to Best Parking. This move now gives The Parking Spot a total of 2700 spaces there and makes it the dominant non-airport-owned adjacent parking operator at Love Field.

The only reasonable answer to this deal is another 20 gates, 12 domestic and 8 international.

DFW can at least add another terminal and encourage the development of a dual hub, Love Field can double and add international, and Meacham Field in Fort Worth can get going again --- the regional growth is so strong and deep all of these are positive.

The days of fortress airports coupling a fortress airline are done. Regional residents benefit far more when the facilities are fertile fields turning a profit for every airline: competition.

It may be a reasonable answer to this over subscription issue, but it is not a reasonable answer to funding issues, nor to political issues of the surrounding residential neighborhoods over noise.

There are reasons why Dallas rebuilt the terminal with just 20 gates. Those reasons still exist and are as powerful as before.

Any act to repeal WARA and add gate space at Love needs to require Southwest forfeit any slots at slot-restricted airports that were awarded to Southwest on the basis of being a "low cost carrier" (which hasn't been the case for at least two decades). Until they give up those slots, I see no reason to allow further expansion of DAL unless Southwest is locked out and the new gates are held open for any new carriers (bonus points for carriers that serve small or mid-size cities that Southwest wouldn't touch because their planes are too big to make money flying there). Better yet, the feds could wait a few years for HSR to get built and running, and see how many gates they really need once the floor falls out on Dallas-Houston demand. This whole thing may resolve itself once Southwest stops flying half-empty planes to Houston every 30 minutes.

When their primary operations are at the far-flung "alternate" airports (like BWI or ISP), they pretend to be a struggling upstart, fighting for the customer against evil AA/UA/DL. But when they're the ones with a base at close-in airports (DAL, HOU) it's suddenly outrageous to suggest that they should have to share "their" airports with other airlines.

I have heard for awhile that one of the runways (13R/31L I believe) will be basically completely repaved in the near future. This will make things VERY painful for all 3 of the airlines. Last fall 13L/31R was closed for construction and there were decent delays and metering.

This makes for some interesting reading on legal maneuverings that had been going on concerning Love Field and the 12 state-of-the-art gates demolished in the wake of the Wright Amendment Reform Act of 2006 (restricting Love Field to no more than 20 gates, thus these 12 were leveled to the ground to fulfill that new restriction).

The petitioners took their case through the Federal courts, winning in 2016 a $133.5 million judgment in their favor. That favorable ruling was overturned by a Federal Circuit Court in 2018.

The petitioners then took their case to the U.S. Supreme Court in March 2019; their petition was denied on June 24, 2019.

I do not agree with what happened to the owners of the 12 gates ... they should have been compensated for the physical destruction of their property! How unfair the system can be!

Old Braniff terminal takes off as a new mixed-use project
The former airline operations base at Love Field is open for business after years of sitting vacant.

Braniff Airways’ old operations base at Dallas’ Love Field has landed its first tenants and is already growing.

Starting in 2018, a development partnership that includes The Arnold Cos, Lincoln Property Co. and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones began a $140 million reconstruction of the historic building on Lemmon Avenue.

Built in 1958 for the legendary Big D airline, the midcentury modern building has been transformed into a new retail, office and aviation complex called Braniff Centre.

Dallas-based air carrier JSX starting direct flights from Love Field to Vegas, Pinehurst resort
The small carrier flies mostly in California, but is adding ‘pop-up’ routes to the seasonal destinations.

Dallas-based independent regional air carrier JSX is starting direct flights from Dallas Love Field to Las Vegas and North Carolina golf destination Pinehurst to help spur tourism to those destinations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

JSX, which sells tickets on charter-style planes, is starting the service to Las Vegas this Friday with return service on Sunday. Flights start June 25 from Dallas to Pinehurst, N.C., home of the iconic Pinehurst resort golf club.

“These are pop-up routes,” said JSX CEO Alex Wilcox. “For a lot of people, it will be the first time they’ve really left the house in months.”

Adding to this, JSX announced flights from Love to Houston Hobby today, starting on November 20th:

Looks like 2 flights a day, but for some random dates and times, their fares can be cheaper than Southwest. This will be the first competition on that airport pair in decades, albeit not from the main terminal building (Continental/United also flew to Houston from Love, but they went to IAH, and American operates DFW-Hobby a few times a day in addition to their DFW-IAH service).

Wow, that is interesting. I wonder how this ends up competing with the HSR project. One of the big selling points for HSR against a traditional airline is that you can just show up and get on. In theory, this airline would offer a similar no-TSA experience.

HSR would definitely beat airlines on capacity, but door-to-door travel time is a tossup depending on where your origin/destinations are relative to the respective DAL/HOU or Cedars/NW Mall termini

And of course, this air service will be up and running in a month, and HSR is only just starting to enter the early stages of constructions. ;)

JSX flies Embraer ERJ-135 and -145 jets with a seating capacity of just 30 passengers.
One single Texas Central car in its eight car train can carry twice as many passengers, therefore the HSR train should be able to carry 16 times as many passengers.

Embraer jets are designed to service smaller cities, such as Waco, Wichita Falls, Abilene, San Antonio, etc. connecting them to airline hub airports like DFW, Bush, or O'Hare.

Unless something happens and the cities' economies stop growing, the increase of trips taken between Dallas and Houston will keep every train and plane full. When people come to like the train ride, Texas Central will find a way to increase trips OR another HSR route will be added.

I don't think anyone's under the impression this is going to meaningfully compete with HSR between Houston and Dallas once the line is built and operational. JSX clearly intends to add more flights, whether that's other cities in Texas where they'd be competing with Southwest/Vonlane for the business/premium traveler, or markets not served nonstop from DAL because 143 seats is too much capacity. If HSR comes in and vacuums up all the business traveler demand, JSX can simply shift their aircraft to new markets from Houston or Dallas.

I hope it doesn't take ten years to approve additional gates to Love Field, with international gates. There's no reason to restrict flights to/from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

I'm all for noise and emission parameters, though, and encouraging private aircraft to use Red Bird Airport is even better.

Late night landings keeping Dallas Love Field neighbors awake
The Love Field Citizens Action Committee has been meeting for months to discuss recommendations for city council.

https://www.dallasnews.com/business/air ... ors-awake/

Residents in neighborhoods that surround Dallas Love Field say late arrivals and takeoffs are keeping children up at night, despite a voluntary curfew meant to preserve the peace in the area around the 106-year-old airfield.

Kerri Lacher, Briarwood neighborhood resident told the Dalllas City Council Wednesday that there are eight scheduled flights that land past the voluntary 11 p.m. curfew, but it has risen to as many as 11. She said she didn’t experience noise in the past, but now does, and anticipates more noise as the growth of Love Field and its carriers continues.

Unless Kerri is 107 years old she should have known better than to move near an airport if she cannot handle the noise. I hate these NIMBYs.
