I wouldn't count on Cathay given all the HK drama and Covid. I wish though! Other news is BA is bringing the whale to DFW starting in March. I hope Qantas brings theirs back soon too.

I wonder if DFW is already thinking about Metroplex air taxi service. Would be a 'terminal' built adjacent to the rental car area?

IDK. I really haven't heard anything since that plan Uber had for a minute. I would think there would have to be special arrangements/plans with the FAA before anything like that could think of getting off the ground (so to speak

FAA put 5G buffer around Dallas Love Field, DFW Airport. What that means for smartphone users
The FAA and the wireless industry agreed to restrict some 5G service around airports for the next six months while the two sides study whether the technology interferes with critical flight instruments.

The mobile phone industry’s major players have agreed to limit 5G phone service around DFW International Airport, Dallas Love Field and 48 other airports nationwide as the aviation and telecommunications industry debate over implementing faster wireless service versus aircraft safety.
That will prevent major cell phone providers AT&T and Verizon from building 5G base stations using the contested C-band spectrum too close to the two North Texas urban airports with hundreds of nearby residents and businesses.

Qantas is launching DFW-Melbourne service starting in December. It will fly 4 times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday), with afternoon departures and early morning arrivals. It will be one of the world's longest flights (8992 miles). Qantas will use Boeing 787 jets for these flights--not Airbus A380 planes like what has been used for their DFW-Sydney flights.
The article goes on to say that apparently Qantas is reducing their A380 fleet, and will now use 787 jets for their DFW-Sydney flights.

Re: DFW Airport
Originally Qantas planned to uses 787s on the SYD-DFW route, but when that plane was delayed they used 747s and A380s as a temporary replacement -- only to find that not only were the larger planes filling up, but that they needed to add even more flights each week. This route has been a gold mine for them.
Interestingly, when Qantas started flying SYD-DFW it was the longest scheduled route in the world. Now, with the introduction of DFW-MEL, it's down to around #10.

Not a passenger route, but Cathay Pacific will be starting flights from Hong Kong using their A350-900 as "preighters". Shame it's not passenger service, but China/Hong Kong's COVID policy makes that hard to see till they update their restrictions.Chuck246 wrote:So first Iberia and now Finnair. DFW Airport to test ‘tugbot’ for cargo operations
An automated tug will be tried out at a cargo operation, ferrying cargo between a cargo terminal and a freighter jet. It won't be unmanned though--an employee will be riding along, ready to stop the tug if it goes awry. No word on if any passenger airlines are considering automated tugs for passenger luggage between gates and planes.

A rare, very big bird flies into town: A British Airways Airbus A380 is scheduled to land at DFW Airport on Friday
More visits will follow, but when flight BA 193 lands around 4:55 pm., it will mark the first time a "superjumbo" has arrived at the airport in two-plus years
After more than two years -- or 827 days, to be exact -- without DFW Airport being visited by a single Airbus A380, a British Airways-operated version of this certified chonker is scheduled to arrive in North Texas at 4:55 p.m. on Friday, July 1. It's then slated to fuel up, and turn right back around for a nonstop return flight to London's Heathrow Airport not even three hours later at 7:45 p.m.
But travelers can seemingly expect to see plenty of this big boy in the months to come. At the time of this writing, every single direct, British Airways-branded flight listed on the airline's website from DFW to LHR (and back) between July 1, 2022, and March 24, 2023, is currently slated to be handled by the A380.
--------------------
Running a couple hours late: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/BAW ... /EGLL/KDFW
For those interested, like most eastbound widebodies the normal summertime departure will go right over downtown, but with the delay tonight it will be after dark. https://flightaware.com/live/flight/BAW ... /KDFW/EGLL
Ironically, this is replacing the pre-pandemic BA-livery 747 -- one of the most beautiful planes ever --with one of the ugliest planes to ever take flight.

Re: DFW Airport
Residents near Love will push Southwest to DFW while the city tries to decide if they would rather fight residents/DFW Airport lobbying or work with Southwest to break the chains on Love Field expansion. This will be decided behind closed doors for sure. My question is, what leverage does Southwest have to push for more Love Field gates? They certainly wouldn't threaten to leave the airport that just comes across as too obvious as a toddler refusing to share their toys. Moving more flights to DFW as a tactic would only help the city staff deal with residents who would applaud any closing of tLove field despite the negative economic effects. If they threatened to move their HQ to Fort Worth near DFW airport, I guess that's a bargaining chip they could use.

Re: DFW Airport
It's definitely a threat for Dallas to add more gates/expand. Love is beyond maxed out.
Re: DFW Airport
If I had to guess, i would guess that Southwest will take both options. Keep Love and expand to DFW. Makes sense for them and they dominate the in city airport. Why not have it all?
Re: DFW Airport
Love needs another 10-12 gates. It could be easy to add those on at each end just to ease congestion and add a few more food options.
Re: DFW Airport
^there's plenty of room to expand Love Field, and with international gates. That being said, DFW has all the room, and expressed interest in terminals dedicated to transfer/connecting flights, and that would be an ideal setting for Southwest. Competition at DFW really needs another carrier to develop a superhub, and the convenience of a Downtown airport area needs to be the primary focus of carriers at Love Field.
Perhaps Love Field can change the industry by having parameters to reduce noise and air pollution.

Re: DFW Airport
SWA/LUV at the Once And Future Superhub DFW could grow beyond what Delta used to be there, for sure.
… Love Field will remain the HQ and I don’t see them threatening to leave for another city under any circumstances. However: their traditional model of planes on point to point to point flights where a significant proportion of budget passengers are not booking nonstops?
That is something that could really use the schedule freedom of DFW to serve the most cross-country passengers. For them, the convenience of Love Field to central Dallas destinations is a non-issue, and given that there could be a lot more of them, it’s best to minimize the conflict between their day to day preferences and those of the local constituency.
My sense is that the majority of whatever coalition of neighbors are still resistant to gates at Love (all of whom moved here knowing it was right there) are concerned not by city investment in the airport — which needs to make good use of the billions of tax dollars already responsibly invested there over 105 years, after all — but specifically by the number of flyovers and any perceived impact on private property value numbers and peace of mind/breath.
But if that is a real impact in the first place, then they each already benefited by wanting to buy, and deliberately buying, their neighborhood property at an airport-adjacent discount. Even renters self-selected into that disproportionately affected spot when Love was already operating. Under the circumstances then, I think it’s frankly unfair of any of them to act like their voice and needs should count proportionately more than, or even the same as, the rest of Dallas citizens’ within an urban policy debate. —No, they don’t need to ethically recuse themselves from trying to weigh in, yet also their self-interested financial bias in the deal (something that does not bias the average citizen on this topic) is clearly, clearly not what a normal voter would think is best for Dallas’ past/present/future public.

Both airports have room to expand terminals. I see a O'Hare or Bush situation for SWA here. I would think they would start international flights out of DFW for starters. Only issue there is at which gates? Both airports are maxed out on gates and need expansions soon. I hope Terminal F gets put back on the front burner soon.

Yeah, Terminal F needs to get started ASAP because it's likely 10 years out from opening its doors. There will be crowding pain well before then considering how quickly airline travel rebounded.
I just hope they've used the extra time to get the designs and details worked out so that all that's left to be done is give the thumbs up to the shovel hitting dirt.

SWA would only need 1-2 gates to get 20-30 departures a day. Probably a similar gameplan as IAH or ORD if they expand to DFW. They have 2 gates and 28 departures out of ORD.
I'm still a doubter and this is a public way to tell Dallas to get started on expansion plans for Love.

Re: DFW Airport
I will be curious if the product quality will be the same. Anyone who knows how these airport restaurant vendors work is it's not the actual company running these locations. A hospitality company gets the right to use the name and sell products with the company that owns the brand as a consultant. I've seen a lot of Dallas restaurants turn down going in at the airports cause the companies that have the contracts to run all these retail and restaurants don't care as much about being true to the brand as much as they care about just peddling goods someone else's brand investment has created recognizable value. It's one thing to add a McDonald's or Starbucks cause those brands have everything documented to a repeatable science cause they try to make their product like an industrial repeated optimized to the hilt service/product. It's another when you try to bring something artisanal, more unique or labor intensive that isn't ready-made freezer stored and defrosted and microwaved to the consumer. Eatzis is a chain for sure but their type of product is pricey and wasteful in cost if not applied correctly. Will this truly be an "Eatzi's" or a very watered-down ghost of the brand?

Very interesting. I did not know that. No wonder DFW eateries are usually terrible.
I recall when Terminal D first opened it had a La Duni that bombed. I think part of the issue was that it was upstairs on a landing and hard to find, but perhaps what you mention above was an issue. Anyone have any insight?
The location for this Eatzi’s is terrible. The Terminal D extension is so far out of the way (my unverified analysis is that those gates, aside from *maybe* the Terminal E satellite gates, are the farthest distance from a Skylink station of any DFW gates). It won’t be convenient for anyone unless they are flying out of the extension or if they have a long time before their flight.

Re: DFW Airport
My overall point is that when these places open don't expect the chefs that work at the real locations to have any real impact on the Airport locations and or produce the same food you may love and have enjoyed. The Airport just buys the rights to the name so the airport can pretend it's got some sort of diversity in supporting local businesses when in fact, it's one or two catering companies running all the restaurants sourcing ingredients from their already established sources to keep costs low. The restaurants that participate enjoy the check, and I am sure some are fine with it, but some that have come and gone left for a reason cause they didn't get to actually run the location to ensure the experience is to their expectations.
WHatburger, Mcdonald's, and Chillis its fine. They already have systems in place to deal with maintaining brand continuity through franchise relationships. It's the local brands that suffer in these deals in some form or another, but it does make DFW Airport look like they are integrating more than chains.

Re: DFW Airport
I guess it's almost like Hudson News running all or some of the terminal newsstands at an airport. It may or may not have Hudson's name on the facade, but in many cases, Hudson is the one running them.

Oh yeah, I forgot how far the terminal D extension was from the rest of the gates. When I used it, it was a pretty long walk of nothing from the main part of D. Nobody will use it unless they are using those 4 gates. I wonder if that's enough to sustain them. Could be, if the location is small enough and they're just trucking in grab and go items from the other Eatzi's locations. But it would have been better to have this somewhere else in D.
Overall, we should have more of our local gem restaurants represented at DFW.
Rodeo Goat, Sixty Vines, Village Baking, East Hampton Sandwich, Mi Cocina, and Mike's Chicken would all be good adds in my opinion.
