Fort Worth: Tower 55

This is a structure where a Union Pacific rail line and a BNSF rail line cross underneath the I-30/I-35W interchange near downtown. It was used for decades as a manned point to watch over rail traffic as this crossing has become *very* busy over the years.

In recent months, a webcam has been placed there for railfans to watch the action of the various trains. Sadly, the webcam has taken on another purpose, as it has been decided that the building structure at Tower 55 is no longer needed. The webcam is currently showing the prep for the demolition work now. (Other similar structures at rail crossings in other parts of the US have met similar fates.)

A post from Facebook this week said the demolition is scheduled for Monday (11-14). Here is a close-up view of Tower 55, from the same Facebook post. (The angle is looking SE, and the Tower is on the SE corner of the rail crossing.)

It took crews several days to get it cleared. I guess it couldn't really be saved in any way, but still, a piece of local railroad history is now a memory.
