Frankly, mixed-use residential is a best case scenario, in my opinion. There could always be a ground-floor gym so the only thing lost is that ugly YMCA structure.

I noticed yesterday the structures (formerly a car wash?) on the southwest corner of McCommas and Central had been razed. I've lost track of all the towers going up in this area but I assume this demo was in preparation for one of them. Woohoo!

There's caution tape around the former Beauty Bar today and some of the building's exterior elements have been removed. It looks like they're preparing to demo the rest of the structure soon.

It's doesn't wow me for sure, and obviously it's subjective, but I think it'll turn out better than the renderings suggest. For better or worse I think it'll be on par with the newish Marriott in Uptown on Fairmount and Carlisle.

On its own, you're probably right. I think a better way to look at it though, rather than "deck park," is "landscaped pedestrian route linking the convention center to the Cedars." hahaha

If people don't feel safe, they don't feel safe - it's not for anyone to decide how someone else should feel. Objectively speaking, this 7-11 was receiving the police calls it was receiving. Just because it's not as bad as what goes on in say San Francisco doesn't mean it's not bad.

If their plan is to be conservative and move along slowly, which seems likely given the plan to slow play the build out by only starting at 12,000 sq ft on that corner, it doesn't make sense to kick out all of your existing tenants in the building across the street to raze and rebuild. If you're referring to the "more than 12,000 square feet of retail buildings along Henderson," these will be built at the corner of Glencoe and Henderson, in the empty field across the street from the Henderson Tap House/Veritas Wine Room shopping center.
